The Perfect Pit-Stop: Modern Rooms and Delightful Breakfast - Hilton Garden Inn Munich Messe
At the end of 2020, the Hilton Garden Inn Munich Messe opened in the town of Feldkirchen, next to the city of Munich, Germany. We took the opportunity on a hot summer day to work in peace for a few hours in an air-conditioned room and were able to explore the hotel well.
LOCATION
For car travelers, the Hilton Garden Inn Munich Messe is very well connected. It is located directly on the A94 freeway and very close to the intersection with the A99 freeway. Munich's city center is about 20 minutes away, and it's only five to ten minutes to Munich Messe, depending on your destination. A gigantic parking garage next to the main building also indicates that this is the target group of guests. Unfortunately, public transportation is really not great; the nearest S-Bahn station is a 30-minute walk away and can alternatively only be reached by irregularly scheduled buses. As a cheap alternative to a city hotel, the hotel is therefore rather less worthwhile in our opinion, the journey is too time-consuming and parking in Munich more expensive than the surcharge for a better located hotel.
The building was only completed for the opening at the end of 2020 and is therefore a very modern new building that was built specifically for use as a hotel. Despite its location in a commercial area, the hotel makes a welcoming impression, and the property is very inviting with many green elements.
ARRIVAL, LOBBY & CHECK-IN
After entering the hotel through the main entrance, you immediately land in the lobby with many modern and comfortable seating options. The check-in counter is at the back left, and the hotel bar is in the middle.
Check-in was very friendly and straightforward. We arrived well before the normal check-in time on site (1 pm instead of 3 pm), but we were told right away that a room was already ready for us. We had checked in advance via the app and thus already selected a room, this was unfortunately just not ready, but a large selection of other rooms. We tell the staff that we couldn't care less which room we get. Nevertheless, as an apology for the fact that our desired room is not ready, the friendly employee offers us to take a free drink from the snack store. Wow, we are pleasantly surprised.
After check-in we were asked if we wanted still or sparkling water as an Honors member, we have free choice and get two bottles.
Parking in the hotel parking garage costs 8€ per night, for Diamond members the price is reduced to 5€. During our visit, however, all free parking spaces on the street in front of the hotel were also empty, who wants to keep his car a bit more private or if the hotel is more booked, can benefit from this favorable offer.
ROOM
We received the booked King Room on the top floor of the hotel. Our view is into the distance over open fields, directly in front of it, however, is a well-traveled highway. However, the windows are well insulated, we heard nothing of the car noise.
With 23 square meters, the room is relatively large for a simple hotel room, we have experienced much smaller rooms. The promised king bed with 175x200cm does not turn out gigantic, but is absolutely sufficient for two. Furthermore, there is a small bench to sit or lie on, a small desk with lamp and chair, a large TV and a small wardrobe with two drawers, in one is the safe.
To our surprise, there is unfortunately no refrigerator in the room, but according to the hotel, a refrigerator in the kitchen area can be used if things urgently needed to be cooled overnight. To be fair, there is no refrigerator specified in the room description either.
The bathroom area is bright and quite spacious. It is covered in the same laminate as the rest of the room, including the large floor-to-ceiling shower area with rain shower. There is a toilet and a large sink with a mirror.
It is important to note that all rooms in the house have the same size, even the rooms with additional sofa bed are not larger than 23sqm. The different categories differ only in the equipment or number and size of beds.
WIFI SPEED
The Internet speed measured in the room was 29.4 Mbps in download and 28.8 Mbps in upload.
ROOM TEMPERATURE
As mentioned, one of the main reasons for our visit that day was the desire for air conditioning. When we entered the room, the curtains were closed, very helpful to prevent the room from heating up too much. We immediately activated the A/C on the highest setting and also immediately felt a cool pleasant draft. Overall, the lowest temperature we could measure during the night was only 22 degrees Celsius, for sleeping we would have liked to have two degrees less. Overall, however, it was of course much more pleasant than without cooling.
HOUSEKEEPING
The housekeeping team still seems to have a few challenges, we suspect that the Hilton Garden Inn Munich Messe is also struggling with a lack of staff.
When we entered the room, it made a clean and fresh impression, but on closer inspection, we could unfortunately see that the cleaning was rather hasty. The faucets and switches in the bathroom still showed many fingerprints, as well as the key pad of the safe in the room. By the way, this was still locked, we could not open and use it. A call about this led to it being opened, but it took a few hours and another inquiry until the staff found time for it.
Another mistake, which was certainly due to the stress but is very annoying for the guest, was that the shower gel in the shower was completely empty and used up. When we called about this, however, at least a new bottle was brought to us in a few minutes with an apology.
Later in the morning, a staff member also knocked hard on the door to ask if we wanted a cleaning - but our DND card was hanging on the door and besides, it was our check-out day. This disturbance was a bit unnecessary.
BREAKFAST
The breakfast at the hotel surprised us very pleasantly. There was a large selection of choices, highlights were a large selection of hot dishes with local specials like Weißwurst with Brezn as well as a waffle station to make your own. In addition, egg dishes could be ordered directly from the kitchen if desired, and the staff there was very accommodating and catered to individual customer requests.
In addition to a large restaurant area, there was also a smaller terrace outside that could be used for breakfast.
RESTAURANTS & BARS
The main restaurant, where the breakfast buffet was served, also offered a small evening menu with a diverse selection of both small and large dishes, starting at 5:30 pm.
In addition, there was a bar next to the reception, where hot and cold drinks could be ordered all day.
ROOM SERVICE
Room service was not offered, but there was an all-day snack store across from the reception, in addition to the bar, where the most necessary items could be purchased.
GYM
The gym was on the basement floor and offered a good selection of fitness equipment, it was open all day. Despite the location, there was some view of a sloping hillside planted with grass and flowers.
LAUNDRY
An absolute highlight, especially for frequent travelers, is definitely the possibility to use the washing machine and dryer for free. We were surprised that this is not advertised much more, there is no indication on the website. Since we travel frequently for several weeks, washing clothes is a necessity. Few hotels offer affordable dry cleaning for a larger quantity, so for better or worse this often brings us to unloved laundromats. The option to wash in the hotel itself would therefore definitely be a reason for us to visit an adequate hotel for two nights every few weeks.
At the Hilton Garden Inn Munich Messe, two washing machines and two dryers were available for free use. Detergent could be purchased at the reception or, of course, brought along yourself. Alternatively, there was of course the additional option of chargeable dry cleaning.
OVERALL SERVICE
Overall, all the staff in the house were very friendly and eager. The hotel was also extremely lightly booked, so we could definitely forgive the staff shortage. However, the focus in housekeeping should be adjusted a bit, because cleanliness is one of the most important criteria in the hotel industry.
STAY DETAILS
We stayed one night at the Hilton Garden Inn Munich Messe, late August 2023. Depending on the booking situation, nightly rates start at around 80€.
STATUS RECOGNITION
Our Diamond status offered us all the expected benefits. We received complimentary breakfast, two bottles of water, and were offered a discount on the nightly parking fee. By the way, upgrades are generally not part of the T&Cs at the Hilton Garden Inn brand, but we have experienced it quite often. In this case, however, we had already booked the best room and all rooms were the same size, so an upgrade was not even an option.
On the day of departure, we were granted a late check-out at 4pm free of charge without any problems.
SUMMARY
Those traveling by car can stay comfortably at the modern Hilton Garden Inn Munich Messe. The new building offers modern rooms and a very friendly team at a very fair price. A special highlight is the good and extensive breakfast buffet with regional specialties. Unfortunately, the location is poorly connected to public transportation, so the Hilton Garden Inn Munich Messe is not a good alternative to a city hotel.
